Camp in the amazing Royal Basin
The trip:
Mount Deception is the 2nd highest peak in the Olympics and sits impressibly at the head of the Royal Basin drainage. The Climb takes us up the Royal Basin trail to the beautiful campground near Royal Lake surrounded by the impressive walls of the range.
From here we make our way up into the alpine zone and begin the rocky scramble up to the ridge that then leads us on to the summit itself.
Dependent on season this climb may be partially on snow cover and loose rock including scrambling sections before we gain the summit and enjoy the view of the Olympic Mountains interior.
Early Season alternative route option; NE chute can also be ascended on 45′ snow slope and scramble dependent on condition and group aspiration.
Itinerary:
1st Day: Meet at the Dungeness Trailhead parking lot, gear check and begin our hike in to the campground -5-7 hrs. Set up camp in the Royal Basin and prepare for the following days climb.
2nd Day: Rise early and begin making our way up the slopes and to the ridge before gaining the summit. Enjoy the views and the situation before descending back to camp for lunch. Continue with our day by hiking back out down the trail to the parking lot to finish. 8-10 hr day.
