Who Can climb Olympus?

Mount Olympus in the Olympic National Park may be relatively small in stature but it is no small challenge and it makes up for its height at just under 8000ft in the variety of terrain we will encounter along the way. To be ready to climb on Olympic we advise that you have a good level of fitness and hiking experience along with previous backpacking trips under your belt.

While not a very technical mountain Olympus does have glaciated terrain, steep snow and steep summit sections that require some rock climbing or scrambling ability.

Physical Fitness required: This 4 day trip is physically strenuous and the summit day can be 10-14hrs so to be ready for this You should have good endurance and have experience caring a 30-45lb pack and be able to ascend 3000ft in 12hrs. Mt Olympus is often underestimated in its distance and stature but it is a long way and a big adventure but definitely worth it!

Technical skills: Your guide will coach in all the needed skill but a pre-requirement is that you have some mountaineering, backpacking and scrambling experience and some experience of rock climbing as summit block is often around 5.3/5.4 grade. You need to be comfortable being lowered or have experience of rappelling.

Mount Olympus Climb Itinerary

Here is a sample Itinerary of our Mt Olympus Guided Climb – Program can and will be adapted to group needs but we generally try and follow this structure. If you wish to add additional days or modify the trip to include other summits or options please feel free to message a request.

1st Day Hoh Trailhead to lewis meadows – 11miles (optional 13 mile campsites)

We meet at the Hot Trailhead Parking lot at 8 am and do a kit check, we then load up and begin the beautiful gentle trek through the rainforest to our overnight Camp spot at the 13 mile bridge area (or if you are feeling good (Elk Lake)

2nd Day – 3.5 Mile To Glacier Meadows

The trail now climbs through the old growth forest and starts to gain altitude toward the massif of the mountain. Crossing a few washouts and though the deep old growth forest we ascend to Glacier meadows taking in the amazing views of the high country as they appear from the trail. We will take this afternoon too run through skills you will need for the following day and then make sure we are all rested for the early start the following morning.

3rd Day – SUMMIT DAY ON MT. OLYMPUS and return to High Camp. (optional decent to Elk Lake campground)

And Early start is essential to make the best of conditions and the weather; We move with climbing packs up to the meadows above the Campsie and then the moraine of the glacier where we get the magnificent views of the blue glacier and MtOlympus itself. We decent to and cross the glacier before ascending the Rond dome of Snow Dome where we get a view of the summit itself. Dependent on conditions we will use different routes to approach the summit of MT Olympus making our way up steep snow slopes and small rock climbing sections to tag the awesome summit and take in the views. We then return the same route and head back to camp at Glacier Meadows. Dependent on client request and sechedule after taking a rest we decent down to Elk lake campsite to enjoy the warmth and relax in the forest for a well earned rest. Prepare for a 10-12hr day.

4th Day- Descend to the trailhead (also Optional 5th ½ day using campground at 5mile island)

We hike out down the trail to the flat trail that follows the Hoh River – This can be a long day but if possible we make sure to stop and enjoy the river and dip our weary feet in the cool water. Finshing at the Hoh ranger station you will be able to head to the Local town of Forks for a well earned rest and reward.

Dependent on fitness or client schedule we can split the last day (which can be a long circa 10 hr hike all the way to the trailhead) we can add another camp (at Lewis meadows or 5 mile camp) and then finish the trek to the trailhead in the morning of the 5th day.
